The 1994 rule book in current use is the 4th edition, much enlarged from the original 1980 book.The source of these shapes, also known as pentominoes and pentacubes, and what sparked the growth of a whole genre of polyform puzzles, was Solomon Golomb's 1962 book, Polyominoes, popularized by Martin Gardner in articles in Scientific American magazine.
