Description

This is a hex based simulation of the battle of Guadalcanal in August, 1942.Guadalcanal was one of the first games to include unit step reduction, however the strengths had to be recorded on a casualy pad. Another interesting game rule, that added a lot of paperwork, was the fact that all Japanese units that were in jungle terrain were removed from the mapboard and only placed on the board when a U.S. unit was adjacent.Victory conditions were straight forward... occupy Henderson Field for 2 consecutive turns or totally eliminate your opponent from the map.The Basic Game rules did not use either step reduction or hidden movement. These features were contained in the Tournament Game and Optional rules. Of course, the losses were recorded on a Casualty Reduction Pad rather than a casualy (sic) pad. Only Japanese units in jungle were hidden and only if US units occupied Henderson Field. If the US did not occupy Henderson Field, only Japanese units in open terrain and within 7 hexes of a US unit had to be on the map. Hidden Japanese units in jungle were only required to be placed on the map when a US unit attempted to enter the Japanese unit's hex. If a US unit was adjacent to a still hidden Japanese unit after movement, the Japanese player revealed that unit and the US player had to attack. The Japanese unit or units were only revealed during the combat phase, not during movement. The victory conditions above are only for the Basic Game. In the Tournament version, victory was based on points at the end of 29 Jan 43 turn. - BoardGameGeek
